EIC Pathfinder

The EIC Pathfinder is a funding programme of the European Commission. It is implemented by the European Innovation Council (EIC), the EU’s innovation council. It belongs to Horizon Europe, the European Union’s research framework programme, and has been running since 2021. It funds the early-stage research from which a breakthrough technology may later emerge.

Unlike many funding programmes, the EIC Pathfinder does not aim at market launch. It starts one stage earlier, at the very earliest phase of scientific work on a radical technological breakthrough. Your project therefore does not yet need a market-ready product ahead of it. For work already close to market launch, other instruments are the right route.

What stands out is the size of the funding at this early stage. Up to €4 million per project is possible, and the funding rate is 100% of the eligible costs. You do not have to provide an own contribution for it.

Research and innovation actors from EU member states and from associated countries are eligible to apply. What is meant are teams working on very early scientific and technological development. Companies are expressly included.

In the Pathfinder Open call you cannot apply on your own. Only consortia are eligible there, made up of at least three independent organisations. At least one partner must be based in an EU member state. The remaining partners come from other member states or from associated countries.

Check this condition first, because it determines access. Anyone who cannot bring together three independent organisations from three countries cannot submit under Pathfinder Open.

Funding goes to early research and development work on the scientific basis of breakthrough technologies. Your project therefore starts before product development. It should create the knowledge on which a new technology can be built in the first place.

What is financed is the joint project of the consortium, not the individual contribution of a single partner. The funding relates to the project as a whole.

In 2026 there are two calls: Pathfinder Open, the open call, and Pathfinder Challenges. Both fund projects from the same early phase. However, they have separate budgets and separate cut-off dates, and you always apply under one of the two.

The funding is a grant. The funding rate is 100% of the eligible costs. It applies equally to all applicants, regardless of country of origin and company size.

Up to €4 million per project is provided for. How much your consortium receives follows from the budget you set out and justify in the application. The maximum amount is not a flat rate but a ceiling.

For 2026, a total of €262 million is available. The money is spread across the two calls of the year. Applications arrive at the cut-off dates of these calls, so the consortium and the documents need lead time.
