WBSO stands for the Promotion of Research and Development Act and reimburses a portion of the costs of R&D projects. The government rewards entrepreneurs who engage in innovation and take financial risks. R&D stands for research and development.
The budget increase amounts to a structural €100 million per year, further expanding opportunities for entrepreneurs. Through the WBSO subsidy, entrepreneurs involved in the development or improvement of a product, service, or process can deduct 50% of labor and material costs from wage or income tax. This is an increase from the previous deduction of 40% for starters, mainly aimed at encouraging start-ups with innovative ideas.
Additionally, the rate of the first bracket is increased from 32% to 36%. The first bracket is also expanded from €350,000 to €380,000. These adjustments particularly stimulate smaller investments, which is where the WBSO is most commonly used.
Material costs include expenses for prototypes, test setups, machines, or laboratories. In practice, utilizing the Promotion of Research and Development Act for innovative projects can quickly yield a company thousands to tens of thousands of euros. A full-time R&D employee can even generate over €27,000 in subsidies per year.
Did you know that there is also a fiscal advantage to be gained through the Innovation Box scheme, and that it can often be combined with WBSO? This means that you pay less corporate tax on the portion of profits directly attributable to innovative products, projects, and services.
Additionally, for innovative projects, there are also schemes such as MIT Feasibility (for mapping technical and economic risks) and MIT R&D Collaboration (specifically for partnerships). Our experts are up-to-date with all schemes and current events and are happy to advise you!
