IKC-ETS 2026: Compensate Your Indirect Energy Costs

European electricity producers are required to purchase emission allowances (ETS) for their CO₂ emissions. They pass these costs on through your electricity tariff. The IKC-ETS scheme was established by the Dutch government to compensate energy-intensive companies, within designated sectors, for these indirect costs. This prevents production from shifting to countries outside the EU (carbon leakage).

Key dates for 2026

• Opening: 3 August 2026 (09:00)
• Deadline: 30 September 2026 (17:00)

The scheme is particularly relevant for larger, energy-intensive manufacturing companies. To be eligible for compensation, the following core conditions apply:

1. Sector match: Your company produces goods within one of the designated sectors. The list has been significantly expanded this year, including the chemical industry, plastics, paper and cardboard, steel and aluminum, glass, ceramics, textiles, and ore extraction.
2. Own production in the Netherlands: There is an active Dutch production facility where you manufacture the goods yourself.
3. Investment in sustainability: You invest at least half of the received subsidy amount in measures that reduce your own CO₂ emissions (scope 1 and 2). This makes the scheme a powerful driver for your energy transition.
4. CO₂ reduction plan: You have a solid plan demonstrating the sustainability steps you will take toward 2030.
